The Idaho Mobile Space Station (IMSS) was created in collaboration with the Idaho Dairy Council, ISGC, and former astronaut Tom Jones, among others, after Ms. Andersen received the Christa McAuliffe (teacher-in-space) fellowship in 2000. A converted semi-truck trailer was used to construct a portable Station that resembles components of the Shuttle, including a robotic arm, exercise bike (like that used on the International Space Station), an aviation flight computer program, etc. The Station was designed for grades 5-8, and includes activities both in and out of the Station, such as “Toys in Space,” access to astronaut food/ice cream, etc. The IMSS serves as an excellent vehicle for space education with support from the ISGC – it has visited many schools across Idaho, been a component of events such as an ISTA annual conference, Mars Workshop, Idaho TECH, an event at Warhawk Air Museum, etc. Thousands of students, teachers, parents, etc. in Idaho and beyond have been exposed to this K-12 “portable science center” that continues to serve Idaho. |
