You can visit the moon, without leaving Idaho, by exploring Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve. No space suit is required to visit this beautiful national park where lava flows and volcanic craters resemble "the surface of the moon as seen through a telescope."

Follow in the footsteps of Apollo Astronauts who visited here in 1969 to prepare for future missions. They visited Craters of the Moon to learn about the volcanic geology of the earth before venturing into space.

In 1999, Astronauts Cernan, Engle and Mitchell returned to Craters of the Moon to help celebrate the Monument's 75th Anniversary. While here they described how knowing what was "in their own backyard" prepared them well for their missions to the moon.

Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve continues to be an important place for scientific inquiry and learning about the earth...and beyond.
