The dunes at Bruneau Dunes State Park are unique in the Western Hemisphere. The Park is home to the largest single-structured sand dune in North America, with a peak 470 feet above the lakes. The Park is also home to the Bruneau Dunes Observatory, which houses several telescopes of various sizes that are available for use by the public. Visitors watch a short orientation program and then have a chance to survey the heavens through the observatory’s collection of telescopes.

Since it joined the consortium, Bruneau has focused on providing quality science programs for the public through their observatory. This includes enhancing components of their visitor program, such as the “Space News” offering, to special events, such as a program dedicated to Mars in 2003. Bruneau has also provided internship opportunities for BSU students, and has collaborated with several BSU researchers to help further research in areas such as gamma ray burst detection.
